HVO Case Study

DPD Ireland’s Emissions
Reduction Initiative

The Problem

DPD Ireland, a major logistics and parcel delivery company, recognised the urgent need to address the environmental impact of their line haul freight operations. These operations, essential for the timely delivery of parcels across Ireland, rely heavily on Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs).

The extensive use of diesel-fuelled HGVs significantly contributed to DPD Ireland’s overall carbon emissions, particularly within their Scope 3 targets, which encompass all indirect emissions occurring in the value chain of the reporting company, including both upstream and downstream emissions.

The Outcome

In response to this challenge, DPD Ireland embarked on a comprehensive strategy to reduce their carbon footprint, with Tria Energy playing a pivotal role in orchestrating this transformation. As experts in sustainable energy solutions, Tria Energy partnered with DPD Ireland to transition their haulier contractors to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a sustainable and renewable alternative to traditional diesel. Produced from vegetable oils and animal fats, HVO can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel.

Guided by Tria Energy, DPD Ireland made substantial investments in new infrastructure, including installing larger fuel tanks to store HVO at their facilities. This enabled DPD Ireland to sell HVO directly to their partners and contractors, making the greener fuel option more accessible and affordable. This initiative not only reduced emissions but also demonstrated DPD Ireland’s commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility.

The transition to HVO was a strategic move that yielded immediate environmental benefits. By enabling their hauliers to use HVO, DPD Ireland significantly reduced the CO2 emissions associated with their logistics operations, making considerable progress towards their Scope 3 emission reduction targets.

Looking Forward

DPD Ireland is committed to building on this initial success. The company is now focusing on transitioning their entire diesel fleet to HVO, including vehicles owned by their partners and subcontractors. The goal is to achieve a comprehensive shift across all operations, ensuring that every vehicle in their network contributes to a greener future.

By implementing this solution, DPD Ireland is setting a new standard in the logistics industry. This forward-thinking approach not only addresses current environmental concerns but also prepares the company for future sustainability challenges. As DPD Ireland continues to lead by example, they are paving the way for other logistics providers to adopt similar practices, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly industry.

Tria Energy’s expertise and proactive involvement were instrumental in this successful transition, showcasing the impact of strategic partnerships in driving significant environmental and operational improvements.
